(p1031)

This beautiful Caughley tea bowl and saucer, c1780-85 is decorated in the rare 'Fenced Garden' pattern. The 'Fenced Garden' pattern was only produced only by Caughley, rather than at Worcester as well, each generally having many similar patterns. This pattern was also usually restricted to Caughley tea wares.

This tea bowl and saucer comes from a Cheshire family that have had this as part of a teaset in their family possible from when the set was first produced in 1780-85. It belonged, I am informed, to a family called 'Cawley' in Cheshire.

The tea bowl and saucer are decorated with the blue and white 'Fenced garden' pattern. This comprises two main scenes. The main one shows a Pagoda like building with a garden that is surrounded by a fence. Within this fenced garden stand two people. the secondary scene shows an Island on which stands some small buildings, one of which stands upon strange stilt like constructions. An elegant floral border completes the decoration.

The tea bowl has the 'Fenced Garden' garden decoration round the outside in a very attractive deep and rich blue.

There is the floral border applied to the inner rim of the tea bowl and is embellished with a gilded rim.

In the base of the bowl is a small Island with three rocks. There are three tiny 'spur' marks evenly spaced in the bowl, these are the marks left from the supports used to support the tea bowl in the kiln during its firing.

The tea bowl stands upon a raised circular foot. There is the typical Caughley glaze free circle around the inner rim of the foot. The underside of the tea bowl is marked with the Caughley 'Salopian' S mark. This mark was used at the Caughley factory in Shropshire between 1775 and1790.

The saucer carries exactly the same decoration as the tea bowl. There is a fine and crisp blue and white 'Fenced Pattern' scene in the centre of the bowl.

Around the rim of the saucer is the floral border with a gilded line round the actual rim.

There is a raised foot rim to the saucer on the underside and it is marked with the Caughley 'Salopian' Sx mark. This mark was used at the Caughley factory in Shropshire between 1775 and1790.

This is an attractive blue and white Caughley Tea Bowl and Saucer, decorated with the rare 'Fenced Garden' Pattern, c1780-85.
