(p1042)

A fantastic and rare pare of 'Kidney' or 'Heart' shaped Caughley
dessert dishes, c1780. These beautiful dessert dishes are both exquisitely printed in blue
and white with the full Nanking pattern. One of the dishes is clearly marked in blue on the
reverse side with the Caughley Salopian mark of 'S' the other one has the rare impressed mark 'Salopian',
although this is very difficult to see as the glaze has filled the mark.

The quality of the deep blue and white printed decoration is
extremely good and clear.
This super pair of dishes has the full Nanking
print in the base of the dish.
Dessert Dish 1:

This pattern shows a full Chinese landscape, with Islands,
buildings, trees, a bridge and people. Starting from the left side of the print
there are two Chinese characters in front of houses and temples on a large
Island. These houses and temples are surrounded by hills, trees and shrubs.

From the main Island there is a stone built bridge passing
across to anther rocky island. The bridge has a wooden fence and on the bridge
are two people crossing it.
On the Island to the right of the scene are more houses and
temples with mountains behind.
On the water between the two Islands sail two boats and high in
the sky fly a 'V' formation of birds. This is certainly a very full and charming
oriental scene.

The scene in the base of the dish is bordered with a
hexagonal, birds eye design band of decoration. Then in the curved sides of the
dish is a very intricate and decorative wide band of oriental style decoration.
This wide band includes panels bounded with scrolls and drapes and in which are
hills, trees and houses. Various oriental patterns and sections go to
constructing this very fine border.
Finally, the rim of the dish is printed with small
circular sections with a dot in the centre of each.

On the underside of the dish, there is the blue 'S' mark, used at the famous Caughley factory c1775-90.
