The circular butter tub, which is in the form of a butter 'piggin'
with two raised side handles, is actually part of the base plate as one piece.
Then there is a cover to the butter tub which has two cut outs for it to fit
between the two handles, thus preventing it from slipping off.

The whole dish and cover are charmingly decorated with hand
painted and colourful bouquets of flowers, including pink roses together with
blue and purple flowers. The detail of the painted flowers is really beautiful.

The circular butter tub part of the dish has three floral
bouquets evenly placed around the outside. These are placed between two sets of
raised blue and gilded lines.

There is applied gilded decoration to the rim of the tub and to
the two raised handles.
The base plate, which is in the shape of a quite deep dish, has
the same form of decoration as on the tub, with magnificent colourful bouquets
of flowers. There is also a raised blue and gilded line around the base plate
and a further blue line at the rim, together with rich gilding.

As with the butter tub and base plate, the cover is again
beautifully decorated with three more colourful floral bouquets.

The rim of the cover has a blue underglaze line and rich
gilding to the edge.

There is a rectangular shaped handle to the cover which has
underglaze blue to the top edge and then enhanced with some more gilding.

On the underside of the base plate, on the inside of the foot
rim, is the tiny blind hole which is where the plate was hung from in the
kiln during firing, a detail to be found on Sèvres manufacture.

This is a rare and most charming French Sèvres butter dish
and cover. The butter tub is an integral part of the base plate, then having a
separate cover. Exquisitely decorated and gilded it is marked on the underside
with the interlaced 'L' Sèvres mark and date letter 'M' equating to 1765.

This absolutely beautiful butter dish and cover is in excellent condition.
There are no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. The only extremely minor
imperfections are a tiny amount of wear to the gilding on the inside edges of the
two raised handles of the butter tub, but this as can be seen is minimal and
insignificant, and some minute flaked off pink enamel from a few flower petals on
the cover - again insignificant.

This is certainly a very fine and elegant Eighteenth century butter tub from
the famous Sèvres factory.
