Caughley Teapot Stand, Hexagonal Shape, 'Royal Stripe & Festoon' Decoration, c1790

(p1080)

A very elegant Caughley hexagonal teapot stand dating from c1790. The shape is of the 'new fluted' design and is beautifully decorated with a pattern known as 'Royal Stripe & Festoon' in underglaze blue and rich honey coloured gilding. There are no manufacturer's marks on the teapot stand but it is from a set where several pieces are marked with the underglaze blue Salopian  'S'  used at the famous Shropshire Caughley factory c1775-90.

The teapot stand has the Royal blue stripe equally spaced in six positions round its body. The centre of each blue stripe has a white gap in which there is a blue diamond in a gilt circle. The blue stripes are bounded with gilded lines and on the blue strip a gilded cross design.

Between the blue stripes are festoons of stylised flowers and foliage in underglaze blue and gold. It is certainly a very elegant design of decoration.

The teapot stand has a rim which is also gilded.

In the centre of the teapot stand is an underglaze blue and gilded star within a gilded circle.

This is an extremely elegant Caughley hexagonal teapot stand, decorated with the 'Royal stripe and Festoon' design, c1790.

Condition:

This charming Caughley teapot and stand in good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. There is a slight warp in the line of the teapot stand where it has slightly twisted during its firing in the kiln, which I think adds to its charm. The only extremely other minor imperfections are some slight wear to the gilding, this mainly to the high spots on the teapot stands rim and the gilded circle round the central star. Also a tiny pin prick fault in the glaze where there was some imperfection in it during the firing process causing it to spit leaving a tiny blemish (see picture below).

A most beautiful and elegant teapot stand for the collector of Caughley or early English porcelain from the eighteenth century. Where there are many tea bowls and saucers to a set, there is only one teapot stand, making it a rare item.
