There are no manufacturer's marks on the plate but it is from a set where several pieces are marked with the underglaze blue Salopian 'S' used at the famous Shropshire Caughley factory c1775-90. This charming Caughley cake or bread and butter plate is very good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. The only extremely minor imperfections are some slight wear to the gilding, this mainly to the high spots on the plates rim, but this is extremely minor. Also there are a few nibbles to the underside foot rim, but these are glazed and thus part of the plate's manufacture and are extremely minor. (see the two pictures below).

A most beautiful and elegant cake or bread and butter plate for the collector of Caughley or early English porcelain from the eighteenth century. Where there are many tea bowls and saucers to a set, there are only a pair of such plates, making it much more rare.
