Rare Wedgwood egg frame, one piece construction of an oval tray, six pierced basket egg cups and central 'canoe' shaped salt dish, c1820

A rare egg frame from the famous Wedgwood factory that dates from c1820. It is rare to find such an item in such excellent condition. This beautiful egg frame would have graced the breakfast table at the early part of the Nineteenth century and would have been used to serve the boiled eggs at breakfast and in the centre the all important salt bowl. This remarkable and most attractive egg frame is constructed in one piece and is decorated in blue and white, including blue floral printed decoration.

This charming egg frame is marked with an impressed 'Wedgwood' mark.

The tray of this egg frame is oval with a raised rim.

The raised rim of the tray has a blue patterned border. there is a blue floral print applied to the centre portion of the tray on either side of the raised canoe shaped salt bowl. the rim of the tray has also a gilded edge to it.

The canoe shaped salt bowl is elegantly raised upon a curved pedestal foot.

There is a blue and white floral print decoration applied to the outside of the salt bowl and on the inner rim a blue border decoration in the same fashion as on the raised rim of the tray. The salt is embellished with a gilt band to the top rim and a further gilt band around the base of the pedestal stand.

One of the most charming feature of this delightful egg frame is the six egg cups that are elegantly made using pierced basket work. each egg cup has pierced concentric circles forming their sides. The rim of each cup is decorated with an underglaze blue rim.

This is a very rare Wedgwood egg frame dating from c1820. It is extremely elegant with its pierced basket egg cups, oval tray and raised canoe shaped salt bowl.

Marks:

The underside of this egg frame is marked with an impressed 'WEDGWOOD' mark and dates from c1820.

Condition:

The condition of this remarkable and elegant egg frame is excellent. there are no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. The only extremely minor imperfection is some natural crazing to the glaze on the underside of the tray (see picture below). Otherwise an absolutely perfect and rare item from the famous Wedgwood factory and a piece for the connoisseur collector of early English or Wedgwood wares.
