The outside of the tea bowl is decorated with hand painted bouquets of English flowers in coloured enamels. These flowers include such delights as English pint roses and lilies. The bouquets are alternate with small insects, including a ladybird and moths.

The tea bowl is raised upon a  circular foot rim, this embellished with a gilt ring

The rim of the tea bowl is gilded with dropping half dots inside the rim. The charming  European landscape is hand painted in the bottom of the tea bowl within a circular  turquoise cartouche.

The painting of the flowers and insects around the body of the tea bowl are incredible. The coloured enamels are  beautiful and include green, yellow, purple and pink to create rich flower sprays.

Like the flowers, the insects between the flower sprays are quite beautiful and look to be ready to flit between the colourful flowers. The three insects appear to be a red ladybird, colourful moth and butterfly.

The outer rim of the tea bowl has a rich dark blue ground band with a scalloped edge. The blue ground has upon it a fine interlinked 'eye' type of design. The blue band is edged at the base with some very fine foliate gilding indeed.

The landscape, skilfully painted in the base of the tea bowl, shows a lake with  trees, bushes and in the distance large hills. In the beautifully executed sky flies a flock of tiny birds. The painting is within a circular cartouche formed by overlapping turquoise husks, shaded on one side to make them stand out.

The underside of the tea bowl is marked with the under glaze blue crescent Worcester mark. This tea bowl and saucer dating from c1780. There are several collectors' and dealers' labels remaining on the underside. These I have left on as part of the history of the tea bowl and saucer, which has passed through important dealers and collects alike.

The fluted saucer with its scalloped rim is decorated in the same lavish way as the tea bowl.

There is the same underglaze blue band around the rim of the saucer, this having the same honey rich gilding as the tea bowl.

The saucer has three bouquets of flowers painted in exquisite coloured enamels. These flower sprays alternate with the same three insects as on the tea bowl.

The scalloped rim of the saucer has half drops of gilding dropping in from the rim.

The landscape painted within the central turquoise cartouche is of amazing quality. This landscape shows a lake with mature trees in the foreground and on the island to the right. Upon the island is a red roofed building. In the distance are more hills and at the foot of the hills what appears to be a distant castle. The sky with its subtle light blues and pinks looks like a morning sunrise with tiny birds on the wing.

The landscape painting is within a circular cartouche formed by overlapping turquoise husks, shaded on one side to make them stand out. Inside this turquoise cartouche is a gilded circle creating a perfect frame for the painting.

The underside of the saucer is marked with the underglaze open crescent mark of the Worcester factory and dates from c1780.

In addition to the crescent mark there are some dealers' and collectors' labels stuck on the back. I have left these as part of the interesting history of the piece. However, they could easily be removed if so desired.

Condition:

This astonishingly beautiful tea bowl and saucer are in remarkably good condition. The gilding and painting are all in very good order, with little wear. If there is any small wear it is to the high points of the moulded body, but this is minuscule. There are no cracks to the tea bowl and saucer. The only very minor imperfections are a flee nibble of the back rim of the saucer, which really is absolutely tiny and two foot rim flake chips that have been filled, as shown in the pictures below. These two tiny chips do not detract in something so exquisite and difficult to see viewing them from the side of the tea bowl rim.

This is certainly one of the very finest Eighteenth century Worcester tea bowls and saucer to be found and perfect for the connoisseur Worcester or early English porcelain collector. It is a rare and beautiful item indeed.
