Caughley Sucrier & Cover, New Fluted Form, 'Royal Stripe & Festoon' Decoration, Salopian 'Sx' Mark, c1790

A very elegant Caughley sucrier and cover dating from c1790. The shape is of the 'new fluted' design and is beautifully decorated with a pattern known as 'Royal Stripe & Festoon' in underglaze blue and rich honey coloured gilding. The sucrier is marked with the underglaze blue Salopian  'Sx'  used at the famous Shropshire Caughley factory c1775-90.

The bowl of the sucrier has the Royal blue stripe equally spaced in six positions round its body. The centre of each blue stripe has a white gap in which there is a blue diamond in a gilt circle. The blue stripes are bounded with gilded lines and on the blue strip a gilded cross design.

Between the blue stripes are festoons of stylised flowers and foliage in underglaze blue and gold. It is certainly a very elegant design of decoration.

The sucrier bowl has a scalloped rim.

The sucrier bowl stands upon a raised foot rim at the top of which is a gilded line round the base of the bowl.

There is a the Caughley Salopian 'Sx' mark in underglaze blue on the underside of the sucrier.

The cover of the sucrier is also fluted and has the same charming decoration as the tea bowl.

The low domed shaped cover has the Royal blue stripe equally spaced in six positions round its body. The centre of each blue stripe has a white gap in which there is a blue diamond in a gilt circle. The blue stripes are bounded with gilded lines and on the blue strip a gilded cross design.

Between the blue stripes are festoons of stylised flowers and foliage in underglaze blue and gold.

The cover has a scalloped rim which is also gilded.

There is a gilded button shaped final to the cover.

This is an extremely elegant Caughley Sucrier and Cover, decorated with the 'Royal stripe and Festoon' design, c1790.

Marks:

The sucrier is marked with the underglaze blue Salopian  'Sx'  used at the famous Shropshire Caughley factory c1775-90.

Condition:

This charming Caughley sucrier and cover are in very good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. There is the tiniest of nicks to the underside rim of the cover, but this is really tiny. The only extremely minor imperfection is some wear to the gilding, this mainly to the high spots on the cover's rim, some of the gilded swags of foliage on the body of the sucriers bowl and the gilt band around the base of the bowl.

It is a very elegant Caughley sucrier and cover for the collector of eighteenth century Caughley or early English porcelain.
