An important part of the eighteenth century tea equipage and tea ceremony, such plates were used to serve cake and bread and butter during tea. Only two such plates would be in a complete teaset, so they are quite rare.

This very pretty plate is beautifully decorated over its entire surface with a blue and white print of an oriental landscape, which includes a large pagoda. There are islands with houses, rocks and trees; between the islands sails a boat and there is a delightful oriental bridge crossing over the water. There are two figures to be seen crossing the bridge.

There is a richly decorated blue and white printed border running round the raised rim of the plate; the rim of the plate is gilded.

The underside of the plate is marked with a blue Caughley Salopian 'Sx' mark. This marks were used at the Caughley factory between 1775-90. This plate dates from c1785.

Condition:

This rare and charmingly decorated 'Pagoda' pattern 'cake' or 'bread and butter' plate is in good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration.  The only imperfection is that the gilt rim has suffered from wear and there are large areas where it has rubbed away, as can be seen in the pictures. Despite the wear to the gilding, this is still a beautiful Caughley plate for the collector of Caughley or early English porcelain.
