The body of the jug is of the charming vertically moulded shape that is known as the 'new fluted' design. It is a very slender shape with a tall bulbous body that opens out to a shaped and scalloped rim.

On the outside edge of the top of the jug is an underglaze Cobalt blue wide border. This dark blue is then embellished with a fine gilt line top and bottom, with a chain link design with dots in the centre running around the jug.

The scalloped rim is also gilded and on the inner rim of the jug is a similar gilt line, below which is a half chain and dot pattern.

The main body of the jug has a gilt line around the bulbous part about which is an entwined gilt foliate tendril.

There is a raised circular foot too the jug, which has a gilt line around it. The underside rim of the foot has a decorator's scrip 'N' mark on it. The tea set from which this jug came was decorated with the Worcester open Crescent mark used at the famous Worcester factory c1755-90.

The handle of the jug is of the open loop 'ear' shape and has a gilt line on the edges and back.

This is a very fine Worcester jug of 'new fluted' design with elegant blue and gilt decoration, c1780.

Size and Weight: (values are approximate)

bullet5" (125mm) in height to the top edge of the handle.
bullet4½ (110mm) from the tip of the pouring lip to the back edge of the handle.
bullet151gms in weight.

Marks:

The underside rim of the foot has a decorator's scrip 'N' mark on it. The Worcester tea set from which this jug came was nearly all marked with the Worcester open Crescent mark used at the famous Worcester factory c1755-90, the jug however does not bare that mark.

Condition:

This charming early Worcester jug is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. The cobalt blue band has bled a little during the manufacture, but this is not a fault. The gilding for the most part is in excellent condition with only a little wear to the lines on the handle and a few of the high points around the rim, as shown in the pictures below. It is certainly a very fine jug for the collector of eighteenth century Worcester.
