A beautiful 'John Rose' Coalport teapot and stand, with
exquisite gilt decoration, c1800. This charming teapot and stand have a
provenance of coming from Grimblethorpe Hall, near Louth, Lincolnshire. It then
came by descent through the Nicholson family and then sold from the estate of
Miss Nicholson, Bedford. It is believed that the teapot, milk jug and sucrier
remained in excellent condition as they were probably not used, the rest of the
tea service was used with a silver teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl instead. It
is wonderful to have such a history associated with such a beautiful item.

The body of the teapot is of a smooth oval shape and sits upon
an oval teapot stand.

The teapot's body is decorated with rich honey gilt decoration
from the mid-point upwards to the shoulder.

This rich decorative band comprises an angular 'zigzag' line
about which is an entwined foliate garland.

The same gilt pattern is applied to the rim of the teapot's
cover.

The raised rim of the teapot is gilded. There is an elegantly
moulded spout to the teapot, which also has rich honey coloured gilt decoration
to the base portion and a gilded tip.

There is an open loop handle with an inner spur near to the base
of the handle. The back edge of the handle has more gilt decoration.

The oval cover to the teapot is of a domed shape and has the
same beautiful gilt decoration as on the body of the teapot. This rich
decorative band comprises an angular 'zigzag' line about which is an entwined
foliate garland.

The moulded oval finial to the cover has gilded lines running
down from the top.

The original oval teapot stand carries the same gilt decoration
as the teapot and cover around its raised rim.

There is a gilt circle in the centre of the stand.

This is wonderful 'John Rose' Coalport teapot and stand with
some provenance, c1800.

Marks:
There are no manufacturer's marks on this item, but from the shape and style
it is certainly from the 'John Rose' Coalport factory c1800.
Generally this teapot and stand are in very good condition, the only
extremely minor flaws are a minute chip on the end of the teapot spout , (see
first picture below); a few brown marks on the inner rim of the cover from the
time of manufacture - (probably from the firing in the kiln), see middle
picture; some minor wear to the gilt decoration, this mainly to one area on the
teapot stand, (pictured below right).
This really is a super teapot and stand with some history attached to it, a
fine one for any Coalport or early English porcelain tea wares collector.
