Very Rare Chamberlain Worcester Oval Shanked Teapot Stand,
Having A Yellow, Red & Gold Border, Pattern Number 221, c1800
(p894)

An extremely rare yellow border Chamberlain Worcester shanked
oval teapot stand, dating from c1800. Yellow is the rarest colour to find used
on early English porcelain due to the complex nature of the firing it was
unstable and so almost impossible to produce. As such, yellow ground porcelains
were very expensive and sought after at the time and a rare item for collectors
to find today.

This very fine example is a delightful oval shaped teapot stand
with moulded spiral shanked decoration to the up turned rim. The teapot stand
has the Chamberlain Worcester pattern number 'No221' in gold on the base. This
pattern number is listed in 'Chamberlain-Worcester Porcelain' by Geoffrey A.
Godden as 'Shanked yellow, red and gold bluebell border' taken from the original
list of Chamberlain patterns. this pattern is also illustrated in plate 114 of
the book in the form of a milk jug carrying this same pattern.
This charming teapot stand is an excellent example of this rare
colour ground. The border of the stand has this rich canary yellow which has
applied decoration of red flowers between elegant garlands of gilt foliage. This
giving a very elegant and rich decoration.

The yellow border is bounded on both sides by a gilt line on the
scalloped rim of the stand and a double line below the yellow band.

In the centre of the stand is an oval gilt line cartouche in
which is a stunning gilt star with an oval red centre.

Between the gilt oval in the centre of the teapot stand and the
yellow border are scattered three red and gilt flower sprigs, in between which
are small single gilt leaves. this pattern is quite delightful and rare to find.

The teapot stand has a raised foot rim and it is marked
with the pattern number 'No 221' in gold on the underside.

Marks:
This stunning
teapot stand is clearly marked on the underside with the Chamberlain Worcester
pattern number 'No 221' in gold. This mark is listed in the Chamberlain pattern
book as 'Shanked yellow, red and gold bluebell border' and the stand dates from
c1800.
This rare teapot stand is in very good condition, with just a tight hairline
crack at one point on the rim (too fine to picture) and some very minor wear to
the fine gilding, mainly to the rim and border of the yellow ground band. These
imperfections are very minor and this remains a very fine Chamberlain Worcester
teapot stand for the connoisseur collector.
