The tea bowl has a smooth body and sits on a raised circular foot rim.

The main decoration to the body of the tea bowl are two blue and white prints. On one side the print shows a mother with her son within the landscape. One is sat upon a chest and wears a gown. Behind this character is a huge basket of fruits on a stand, including a pear or quince and peach. There are further stands and vases with flowers and a jug.

The smaller figure of her son sits at the foot of his mother and hold a fan in his hand. This boy gazes upon a very tall vase in which are some large flowers. Behind this tall vase is a fence.

The subsidiary print on the reverse of the tea bowl shows various shaped vases containing more fruits and flowers, these are in a Chinese landscape with trees and hills in the background. There is also a house and temple, which looks rather like a church, to the back left in the distance. These are rare and early Caughley prints and extremely charming.

The rim of the tea bowl has a simple single blue line applied. Also, in the base of the tea bowl is a blue flower completing the decoration of this exquisite and rare tea bowl.

It can be confirmed as a Caughley tea bowl by reference to 'Caughley & Worcester Porcelains, 1775-1800' by Geoffrey A. Godden. SBN 257 65022 9. In this publication the description of the 'Mother & Child' pattern is given and it also details the difference between this pattern used at the Worcester factory and that at the Caughley factory. Essentially, the main print of the mother and child is the same on both. However, the subsidiary print on the reverse of the tea bowl is substantially different. On the Worcester print it shows from left to right a tall flower vase, tall pedestal, a large jar with spoon handle protruding and a tea kettle. On this Caughley print there is a wide vase or jardinière of flowers, a bottle-shaped vase-like object and a pot of flowers on a tripod-based stand. These two prints are illustrated in Geoffrey Godden's book in Plate 255 where these differences in the subsidiary print can be clearly seen.
