'Barr' Worcester Circular Shanked Milk Jug, Blue and Gilt Decoration with 'Three flower sprig' pattern' and Blue and Gold diamond bands, c1795

A very elegant and well moulded circular spiral shanked milk jug, decorated with blue and gilt decoration including 'Three different flower sprigs' evenly spaced around the body. There is also a band of underglaze blue diamonds with dots linked with gilded decoration running around the shoulder of the jug and on the top of the pouring lip. This charming milk jug was made at the famous 'Barr' Worcester factory c1795. It is marked with the scratched Barr 'B' mark of the Worcester factory.

This very fine quality milk jug is moulded with 'shanked' (or spiral) lines which was the latest design in fashion at the later period of the eighteenth century. These moulded lines are very finely potted and create a most decorative effect.

 

Evenly spaced around the body of the jug are the three blue and gilt flower sprigs.

The rich underglaze Cobalt blue border runs around the shoulder of the jug's body, This is decorated with gilt diamonds and dots. There is also the same blue and gilt decoration to the pouring lip of the jug.

The open loop handle of the jug has an inward spur towards the base and the back of the handle is decorated with gilt foliage.

The underside of the jug is marked with the scratched 'B' mark of the Barr Worcester factory, the jug dating from c1795.

Condition:

This elegant 'Barr' Worcester shanked milk jug is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. There is just minimal wear to the gilding of the rim and back of the handle, but this is very minor.
