A rare and very attractive John Rose Coalport oval straight sided teapot c1803, beautifully decorated with light brown classical scenes to each side of the teapot and its cover.
John Rose had been an apprentice to Thomas Turner at the Caughley factory until aged 21 when he set up his own manufacturing company with Edward Blakeway at Jackfields around 1793. By 1796 they had set up a works across the other side of the River Severn at Coalport, from where this delightful teapot originated.
This very elegant teapot has very beautiful classical scenes on each side and on the cover. There are two different scenes, one showing a building with three square towers in a mountainous landscape, the other a rather Gothic building with a square tower to one side, also set within a mountainous landscape. These scenes are printed in a soft light brown hue.
There is a rich honey coloured gilded line above and below these scenes on the body of the teapot, and the same applies to those on the cover.
The elegantly faceted moulded spout has delicate gilded decoration over it and a gilded end to the spout.
The smooth oval cover of the teapot fits within a recess in the teapot and has the same two pretty scenes applied to it on each side.
The handle of the teapot is of an ear shaped open loop and has applied gilt decoration applied to the back edge.
The elegant oval finial of the cover has lovely gilded decoration to the top portion, this taking the form of radiation lines and dots around the rim.
This is a rare and delightful Coalport 'John Rose' Rare Oval Straight Sided Teapot, Applied Classical Scenic views, c1803.
