A charming Caughley 'bread and butter' or 'cake' plate, made at the famous Caughley factory c1785. This delightful plate is beautifully shaped. It has deeply moulded sides and smooth curving bowl. It is beautifully decorated with the blue and white 'Pagoda' pattern with gilt embellishments.

An important part of the eighteenth century tea equipage and tea ceremony, such plates were used to serve cake and bread and butter during tea. Only two such plates would be in a complete teaset, so they are quite rare.

This very pretty plate is beautifully decorated over its entire surface with a blue and white print of an oriental landscape, which includes a large pagoda. There are islands with houses, rocks and trees. Between the islands sails a boat and there is a delightful oriental bridge crossing over the water. There are two figures to be seen crossing the bridge.

There is a richly decorated blue and white printed border running round the raised rim of the plate. The rim of the plate is gilded and there is a gilded border of semi-circles and dots around under the blue border decoration of the plate.

The underside of the plate is marked with a blue Caughley Salopian 'S' mark. This mark was used at the Caughley factory between 1775-90. This plate dates from c1785.
