A rare and very attractive Caughley tea canister beautifully decorated with a large blue and white print of the oriental 'Pagoda' pattern, c1785.

This very elegant tea canister is of a 'barrel' shape with vertical moulded lines and of excellent proportions. It is made of soft-paste porcelain and is typical of the shape popular at the end of the eighteenth century. This delightful tea canister has been charmingly decorated and is beautifully marked with the Caughley underglaze 'So' mark dating it to c1785.

The decoration is underglaze blue with a clear print of the 'Pagoda' pattern. The pattern is of an oriental scene, with a large Pagoda' and two people  crossing a stone bridge. Other characters of this pleasant scene, including a sailing boat, islands, houses, rocks and trees.

Around the shoulder of the tea canister is a 'Nan king' style blue decorative border. Below this is a very richly gilded band of decoration of foliage within circles bounded top and bottom by gilded lines.

The little lid of the tea canister is decorated with the same fine blue and white 'Pagoda' pattern print and has the same gilded band of decoration around the knob finial. The lid is a loose fit in the recess of the tea canister. It is often rare to get a canister in such good condition together with its lid.
