A striking John Rose Coalport teapot and stand of waisted spiral fluted form and beautifully decorated in cobalt blue and gilded decoration , c1798.

John Rose had been an apprentice to Thomas Turner at the Caughley factory until aged 21 when he set up his own manufacturing company with Edward Blakeway at Jackfields around 1793. By 1796, they had set up a works across the other side of the River Severn at Coalport, from where this delightful teapot originated.

The main body of this charming teapot is of the waisted spiral fluted design (the body narrows at the lower portion and it has moulded spiral lines)

There is a broad underglaze cobalt blue band to the top of the teapot's shoulder and to the rim of the cover, these are embellished with rich honey coloured gilding in the form of a stylised garland of roundals, leaves and berries. The very rim of the teapot is also gilded.

The spout of the teapot is half faceted to the lower portion and the spout is richly embellished with gilt foliate decoration

There is an open loop handle with inward pointing spur to the lower portion and has gilded leafs to the back edge.

A gilded scalloped line goes round the lower portion of the body.

The oval cover has the same spiral fluted moulding and applied cobalt blue and gilded decoration as the teapot.

The moulded mushroom style finial has applied gilded decoration to the top portion. There is also a scalloped gilded line round the top shoulder of the cover.

The oval stand has a moulded spiral fluted rim, this having the same rich Cobalt blue and gilt decoration as the teapot and cover. In the centre of the stand are the faint remains of a gilded central flower sprig and garland.
